Lunar Eclipse

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes behind the Earth so that the Earth blocks the Sun's rays from striking the Moon. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, a lunar eclipse can only occur the night of a full moon. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon's location relative to its orbital nodes. The most recent total lunar eclipse occurred on June 15, 2011; it was a central eclipse, visible over Europe and south America after sunset, over Africa and most of Asia, and Australia before sunrise. It was also the longest and darkest lunar eclipse of the century, lasting 100 minutes. The previous total lunar eclipse occurred on December 21, 2010, at 08:17 UTC.

Unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be viewed from a certain relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of the Earth. A lunar eclipse lasts for a few hours, whereas a total solar eclipse lasts for only a few minutes at any given place, due to the smaller size of the moon's shadow.

Oil Rig Safety Security Systems

OK, first let us first know what exactly is an oil rig?

It is an offshore platform, also referred to as an oil platform or oil rig, is a large structure with facilities to drill wells and extract and process Petroleum and Natural Gas and export the products to shore. Depending on the circumstances, the platform may be Fixed Platform to the ocean floor, may consist of an Artificial Island, or may float.

Just imagine a fire in an oil rig?

It would be so horrible. So here are some safety measures taken during a fire accident in an oil rig:-

1) If there is a minor accident caused then they put it off with a foam extinguisher. If in chance it is a fire caused by an electric short circuit they use Dry chemical powder (DCP) extinguisher.

2) If it is a big fire accident then they is no way to stop the fire. The people aboard the rig must be evacuated within 30 min. This is done by helicopters, life rafts and life boats.

3) As every institution or an organization or an industry has some code of safety to follow. In oil rigs and some ships the specific security code or a book of instructions to follow is IAMSAR (International Aeronautical Maritime Safety and Rescue).

4) For the communication from the rig to another ship or seaport there are some instruments used in the radio room of the rig. The instruments are:-

a) SAT-C: - It is known as satellite at sea communication. In this the crew members can talk to a near by sea port or a ship.

b) MF-HF Radio: - It is a Medium Frequency and High Frequency radio. Through this the crew member can communicate with the nearest sea port. In this Radio there is one button called DSC Distress button. When there is any problem or distress in the rig if this button is pressed then the information of the ship and the signal of a problem in the rig will be shown in the nearest sea port so that it can immediately send the rescue operation team to the rig.

c) VHF Radio: - It is a Very High Frequency Radio. Through this radio the crew members can talk to the seaport through two channels. Channel 16 and channel 70. Through channel 70 they can explain the problem clearly to the people in the seaport.

d) EPIRB: - It is Emergency Programmed International Rescue Beacon. It is automatic. When the EPIRB touches water then it will send the full details of the rig and the location of the rig with the latitude and longitude and Time in GMT to the nearest seaport. It is helpful so that the seaport can immediately send the rescue operation team to the rig. There is one EPIRB in one rig. It can float.

e) SART: - It is Safety and Rescue Transmitter. It is placed in each life raft and life boat and one in the radio room. It has to be operated by hand. When the rig is in danger then if this thing is operated it will send the information to the nearest ship or sea port. In the radar of the ship or the sea pot they can see the location of the rig blinking. So the ship can come to the immediate rescue of the rig or the sea port can send the rescue team to the rig. In a life boat or a life raft if it is operated the information is send to a near by ship or a sea port for the rescue of the crew members evacuated from the rig using a life boat or a life raft. The crew members evacuated from the rig through life boats or life rafts must be saved within 24 hours.

5) The rescue team sent by the seaport rescues the crew members come by helicopters mainly.

6) In case there is an oil spill the rescue teams come in tug boats to the rig and keep some big plastic drums like things to prevent oil from spreading away.

7) There will be separate fire fighting boats which will come to the rig and throw foam mixed with water to keep off the fire from a distance about 70m away from the rig.

Discovery of X-rays

In late 1895, a German physicist, W. C. Roentgen was working with a cathode ray tube in his laboratory. He was working with tubes similar to our fluorescent light bulbs. He evacuated the tube of all air, filled it with a special gas, and passed a high electric voltage through it. When he did this, the tube would produce a fluorescent glow. Roentgen shielded the tube with heavy black paper, and found that a green colored fluorescent light could be seen coming from a screen setting a few feet away from the tube. He realized that he had produced a previously unknown "invisible light," or ray, that was being emitted from the tube; a ray that was capable of passing through the heavy paper covering the tube. Through additional experiments, he also found that the new ray would pass through most substances casting shadows of solid objects on pieces of film. He named the new ray X-ray, because in mathematics "X" is used to indicated the unknown quantity.

In his discovery Roentgen found that the X-ray would pass through the tissue of humans leaving the bones and metals visible. One of Roentgen’s first experiments late in 1895 was a film of his wife Bertha's hand with a ring on her finger (shown below on right). The news of Roentgen’s discovery spread quickly throughout the world. Scientists everywhere could duplicate his experiment because the cathode tube was very well known during this period. In early 1896, X-rays were being utilized clinically in the United States for such things as bone fractures and gun shot wounds.

Mona Lisa's enigmatic smile enravelled

For nearly 500 years, people have gazed at the Mona Lisa with a sense of bafflement - first she is smiling then the smile fades; a moment later it returns, to dissapear again.

Now, scientists claimto have uncovered the secret of how Leonardo produced the optical effects that created the enigmatic smile of Mona Lisa..

A team in Europe has found that the artist managed to reach the trade mark smoky effect, known as sfumato, on the painting by applying upto 40 layers of extremely thin glaze, thought to have been smeared with his fingers.

The glaze, mixed with subtly different pigments, creates the slight blurringand the shadows around the mouth that give the Mona Lisa the barely noticeable smile that seems to dissapear when looked at directly.

Using X-rays to study the painting, the scientist were able to see the layers of paint and glaze had been built up to varying levels on different areas of the face.

With the drying time for the glaze taking months, such effects would have taken years to achieve.

1. He’s originally from Weymouth
Although he now resides at the Aquarium Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, Paul was actually born in Weymouth and moved from the town’s Sea Life Park in 2006.
Fiona Smith, from Weymouth Sea Life Park, told the Dorset Echo: “He never made any predictions while he was living here but maybe he was waiting for a big event like the World Cup until he revealed his abilities.

Argentine chef Nicolas Bedorrou was so angry after Paul correctly predicted his team would lose its quarter-final clash with Germany that he suggested a way to cook the octopus.

One of the first scale to estimate wind speeds and their effects was created by Rear Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857) of the British Royal Navy. He developed the scale in 1805 to help sailors to estimate the winds through visual observations.
The scale starts with 0 and goes to a force of 12. Initially the scale was only meant to be used only at sea. But today it describes conditions on land as well and is accepted as the standard in wind speed estimation.

STUNTS at Collectorate

STUNTS successfully completed its third fund-raiser program by accumulating Rs. 4,812/-. The purpose was to participate in CM-relief fund for the flood affected people of Kurnool and other districts. So we had the opportunity to visit Visakhapatnam collectorate.
STUNTS members Ganatma, Siddhanth, Fawaz, Samhitha, Ananya, Akshita, Manognya and Hanisha lead by Teacher Aparna met Collector Sri Shyamala Rao and presented the cheque for CM-relief fund. We all were excited to meet the collector as it was a great opportunity for the students.
STUNTS greeted the collector with a bouquet and Ananya presented a flower pot. Ganatma explained about STUNTS and Little Angels STUNTS blog to the collector.
We students were so impressed with the attention paid to us by the collector. We happily left the collectors office with his blessings and autograph.

Skylab

Skylab was an 100-ton space research laboratory launched by the N.A.S.A on May 14, 1973. It was intented to be a large floating workshop to test man's capability of sustaining prolonged period of weightlessness in the space. Three teams of astronauts were sent up in Appolo spacecraft to work in the laboratory on importent experiments. The skylab dropped out of the orbit and fell like a meteor into the Indian Ocean near Australia on July 11, 1979.

Tsunami

Tsunami is a series of water waves called tsunami wave train that is caused by the dis placement of a large volume of a body of water. The original Japanese term literally translates as "harbour wave".

Tsunamis are frequent occurence in Japan; approximately tsunami has struck Japan in 195 events. Due to the immense volumes of water and energy evolved, tsunamis can destroy coastal regions. Casualties can be high because the waves move faster than humans can run.

Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, underwater eruptions due to detonations of nuclear devices at seas and oceans, landslides, other mass movements, bolide impacts and other disturbances above or below water have the potential to generate a big tsunami.

The Greek historian Thucydides was the first to relate tsunami to submarine earthquakes, but understanding of tsunami's nature remained calm until the 20th century and is the subject of ongoing research.

The study of how tsunamis work is called tsunamigenesis.

Some metrolofical conditions, such as deep depressions that cause tropical cyclones, can generate a storm surge, called a meteotsumani, which can rise tides several meters above normal levels. The displacement comes from low atmospheric pressure within the centre of the depression. As these strom surges reach shore, they may resemble tsunamis, inundating vast areas of land. Such a storm surge inundated Myanmar in May 2008.

Washington, Sep 26th: a line of massive boulders on the western shore of tonga may be the evidence of the world's largest tsunami debris, which is upto 9 meters [30 feet] high and weighing upto 1.6 million killograms [3.5 million pounds]. The seven house-sized coral boulders were likely flung ashore by a wave revailing in the in the 1883 krakatau tsunami, which is estimated to have towered 35 meters [115 feet] high. Currently they are located 100 to 400 meters [300 to 1,300 feet] from the coast. these could be the largest boulders placed by a tsunami,worldwide, said Matthew Hornbach of the University of Texas Institute of Geophysics. Karakatau tsunami was nat a one-off event, he added.

How to overcome hurdles?

There was a boy named Rahul. He along with his friends planned to make a science project model for display in his school. He and his friends planned to make an irrigation dam model and met at his home. They made the model using thermocole blocks, sealed the edges and corners with putty and tested it with water prior to painting. Upsetting them all, they found water leaking through thermocole block pores. Everybody started thinking that all their efforts were wasted as the model was leaking badly. There was panic in them.

Rahul kept his cool and started working on the model. He along with his friends applied putty on all the blocks again and corrected the defects of the model. Once again they tested the model upon drying and still found some leaks from the model, typically from the water storage area. This time the panic was a little less and all of them thought of a better putty to stop those leakages.

They came up with the idea of water cement putty, covered entire water basin with it and successfully stopped water leakages. Finally all the boys felt happy as their model turned out good and operated successfully.

Moral: We should not feel panic or sob when we do something wrong, instead we should keep our mind cool and try to solve it.

Fiber Glass and its uses

The Venetians in the 15th century knew how to draw glass into very thin rods that could be bent slightly, but it was not until the 1890’s that glass fibers as we know them today become a possibility.

Various manufacturing methods were developed mainly in Germany- where fiber glass helped to overcome asbestos shortage in the World War I (1914-1918) and in United States. In 1938 a United States company introduced a method of drawing out the glass filaments (threads) by blasting them with steam as they immerge from the holes in the bottom of the melting unit. The same company introduced a method of winding the fibers on to spools which enabled glass fiber textiles to be produced at faster rate. These are the methods on which modern production is largely based and they made possible the rapid growth of the glass fiber industry since the end of World War II in 1945.

A glass fiber is stronger than any other textile fiber of the same weight at present available. They have been used in the form of textile for decorative materials such as curtains and chairs, in protective clothing, in the filtration of gases and liquids, as structural parts of boats, supersonic aircrafts and missiles.

Glass wool is also used widely for many insulating purposes in industry as well as in domestic roofs and attics. Pure glass can be made into fibers to transmit electricity over long distances. These fibers are called optical fibers.

What is Creativity and How to Improve Creative Skills

Critical and creative thinking are the two most basic thinking skills. Critical thinking is a matter of thinking clearly and rationally. Creativity consists in coming up with new and relevant ideas. To be a good and effective thinker, both kinds of thinking skills are needed.

For many people, creativity is something reserved for scientists or artists. But this is to ignore the fact that we are faced with countless problems in our daily life, and it is precisely creative thinking that helps us come up with solutions to these problems. We need to make use of our creativity whether we are thinking about how to get more marks or how to make our freinds happier.

Many students also seem to think that creativity is a matter of waiting for inspirations. How inspiring ideas come about is however regarded as a rather mysterious process, and it is just a fact that some students are more creative than others. But it would be a mistake to think that creativity is a passive state of mind. While it is true that there is no special algorithm for creativity, there are thinking skills that can be taught and things one can do to enhance one's creativity.

To come up with something new is to produce something that is distinct and special. In order to be creative we must be ready to deviate from the ordinary and the traditional. This implies a certain courageous exploratory attitude and curiosity in one's character.

But where do new ideas come from? The simple answer is that new ideas are actually old ones rearranged in a new way. This applies to everything under the sun whether making a small toy car or making a big space shuttle. How do we generate new ideas from old ones? Simply speaking, ideas are usually composed of different elements, and we look for new combination of ideas by joining different ideas together, deleting some elements, or replacing some elements by other ones.
As a concrete example, consider the so-called "FASTSKIN" swimsuit that was introduced by the company Speedo around 1996. Main goal in designing a swimsuit for athletes is to reduce the total amount of drag over the surface of the swimsuit. The company's researchers noticed that sharks are able to move very fast in water in part because of V-shaped ridges. Researchers designed swimwear fabric emulating sharkskin that produced less drag and turbulence. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, 28 of 33 Olympic Gold Medal winners wore this type of swimsuit, testifying to its success.

So the ingredients for creativity depend on the store of ideas that are available for recombination. If you have a limited domain of knowledge, you will have fewer resources to draw from in forming new ideas. This is why curiosity and a knowledge base can significantly enhance one's creativity. This is also why it can be useful to try to solve a problem by consulting other people with different expertise.

Ruskin Bond divided books into two classes- books for the hour and books for all time. A book for the hour is simply the useful pleasant talk of some person. There is no harm in reading such books, but it is a great mistake to allow such light reading takes the place of the study of true books- books for all time, the classic of literature. These books for all for all time are to be chewed and digested that is read wholly and with diligence and attention.

At the age of 11, we pity ourselves for being ignorant about the presence of these great books in our exotic library.

Undoubtedly, the sight of thick books would strain our eyes and dishearten our reading interest, but our English teacher beheld our enthusiasm with abridged versions of great writers.

Gradually the interest of reading metamorphosed into presenting the stories as skits. When discussed with the teacher, she conducted a skit competition, where in the girls performed “The Merchant of Venice & Twelfth Night” stood first and second in the competition.

Eventually, we developed dialogue writing, dialogue delivery, overcome the stage fear, confidence and above all the zeal to read many such books. Hope one day we carry the original writings; we chew it and digest it to our heart fullest.

Temper Control - A Moral Story

There was once a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a teddy bear toy and a black marker pen as a birthday present. Boy was very happy with the teddy bear and asked his father what he should do with marker pen. His father told him that every time he loses temper, he must make a mark with the marker on the teddy bear.

The first day, boy had made 13 marks on the teddy bear. Over the next few weeks, as he didn’t like to put marks on the teddy, he learned to control his anger. Then the number of marks he made every day came down. Finally the day came when he didn’t lose his temper at all. He happily told his father that he could control his temper, but felt bad since teddy bear became dirty.

Father appreciated son for his temper control and told him to wash the teddy bear and clear all the marks. Son washed the teddy bear repeatedly so that the teddy bear looks nice again and took it to his father.

Father, looking at the son, said “You have done well, my son, but look at the dirty marks still on teddy. Teddy could never be the same. Same way when you say things in anger, they leave a scar on peoples heart just like the marker. It won’t matter how many times you say I AM SORRY, the wound is still there.”

BOY THEN UNDERSTOOD THAT BETTER NOT TO LOSE TEMPER AND REGRET LATER.

To invent new connections, the maintenance of uncertainty is important for a time. "Closure is a killer; it strangles associative thinking, in favor of arriving at "an answer". Early in the process, leveraging uncertainty, riding it, and valuing it are critical to developing robust ideas

ASBESTOS, its uses and hazards

Asbestos is the name given to a group of minerals . It usually contains lime, magnesia and sometimes iron. It is dug up from great open pits. It is soft, silky fibers. It can be woven like wool and cotton because it is fiber in form. Asbestos can stand up to temperatures of 2,500C. It is mainly used as an industrial fiber.

In ancient temples the wicks of torches were made of asbestos so that they would not burn away as cotton wicks do. In 19th century it became cheap. The things made from asbestos are boilers, building roofing sheets, fire-resistant and protective clothing. Nearly half of the asbestos products are made in United States of America.

Asbestos can be harmful to health. The fine fibers if inhaled can produce a lung condition called ‘Asbestosis’ (which leads to shortness of breath) and can increase the risk of lung cancer. Demands began to be made that it be removed from some public places, notably schools and even that it be banned altogether. Usage of Asbestos in crayons and toys had been already banned to safeguard children.

Sir Isaac Newton

The British Physicist and Mathematician Isaac Newton is regarded as one of the greatest scientists of all time. He was a farmers son, born at Wools Thorpe in Lincolnshire, England, on December 25th 1642. At the age of 18 he went to Cambridge University to study Mathematics.

He saw an apple dropping from a tree and began to wonder why it should fall straight downwards. This led him to create The Theory of Gravitation. His Theory of Gravitation was a particular importance in working out the motion of planets and the orbits of comets. In 1666 he discovered the nature of white light by passing a beam of sunlight through a prism. Newton’s work on light led him to build the first reflecting telescope in 1668. He also invented the calculus.

In 1705 he was elected as the president of The Royal Society, an office he held until his death. He was knighted {Sir} in 1705. He died on March 20th 1727 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

What is Attitude? (By a simple story)

There was a man who made a living by selling balloons at a fair. He had all colors of balloons including red, yellow, blue and green. Whenever his business was slow, he would release helium –filled ballooned into the air and when the children saw it go up, they all wanted to buy one. They would come up to him, buy a balloon and his sales would go up again. He continued this process all day.

One day, he felt someone tugging at his jacket. He turned around and saw a little boy who asked, “If you release a black balloon, would that also fly?” Moved by the boy’s concern, the man replied with empathy, “Son, it is not the color of the balloon; it is what is inside that makes it go up.” The same thing applies to our lives. It is what is inside that count.

The thing inside of us that makes us go up is our Attitude.

Hope that all you kids got new cloths this new year and more for the coming Pongal festival. Well parents spent lots of time to buy new cloths for you kids. Now is the time for you to think about your old cloths.

Some old cloths might have become small for you to wear, but still good in condition. So to save your cupboard space, don tthrow them out... there are poor people willing to use them. There is a charity organization collecting all old cloths and distributing them to the poor. So why not STUNTS kids collect them and hand over them "SHAREASERVICE.COM".

SHAREASERVICE.COM is a e-N.G.O. collecting old cloths and distributing them to the needy. Mrs. Swethambari and her friends started this a few years back and now its a big charity society helping poor and needy.

Home-made paper

How to make home-made paper

The paper which we buy is made up of wood pulp. For this wood pulp they cut trees. We can reduce cutting trees by recycling the used papers. We can use these recycled papers for making greeting cards etc if not for writing. So, let us make our own home-made papers and reduce deforestation.

Materials required: - Waste paper, water, tub, Fenugreek seeds, sieve and cotton cloth.

Procedure: - Take some waste papers and cut them into small pieces. Put all waste papers pieces in a tub and add some water. Add some fenugreek seeds to waste paper in tub and let them soak overnight or for many hours. Fenugreek seeds give sticky nature to waste paper that would help us in forming paper sheets. Take soaked waste paper in a kitchen mixer and make it into fine paste. Thus the paper pieces and the fenugreek seeds become crushed and form the paper pulp.

Put the paper pulp into a tub and add plenty water to make it very thin. It shouldn’t be thick. Take a sieve, dip it into the pulp and lift it up carefully. A layer of pulp will be trapped on the sieve and the water goes back to the tub. Transfer this thick layer of pulp from the sieve to the cotton cloth by turning the sieve carefully. Absorb the wets from the back side of sieve with a dry cloth and lift the sieve carefully. Thus we successfully made our first hand made paper thick and wet.

Keep on repeating this process till the pulp is over, keep the cloth in the sunlight and let it dry. After it dries, slowly peel out the paper which is formed on the cloth carefully and then cut it into the desired shape you want. If there are wrinkles and lumps on the paper then you may keep them between books to flatten.

Reading a text book may seem as simple as just keeping up with the assigned reading, but a clear strategic approach will help any student get more out of their school books. Here are four steps student can follow when reading and taking notes from his text books.

Overview

The overview gets the student focused on the topic. It's a refresher of what they've already learned and a glance at what the student is about to discover. The overview consists of reading the breakdown of the chapter. Student should look at the title and headings, then read any front matter, such as a preface, or backmatter, like a summary or an appendix. A glance at the index is a good idea because it pulls out specific terms student will encounter in the reading. Next the student should look at the graphs, tables and illustrations in the chapter. An overview helps your student get his/her bearings.

Inquiry

Having questions in mind at the outset is important for student's understanding of new material. They help the reader stay focused and provide a sense of purpose. One approach is to formulate questions based on the chapter headings encountered in the overview. Student can then read the section in search of an answer to his question. For example, if the heading is 'General Grant's Plan of Attack,' the question might be 'What are the three main points in General Grant's plan of attack?'

Reading

With the specific question in place, reading becomes a search for information, more like an investigation. The questions will change as the reading continues. New questions may arise. Tracking the twists and turns of the information stimulates active reading and that's the key.

Take Notes

Keeping a notebook is crucial. Student should write down all the questions and their answers as they progress through the material. At the end they'll have a useful, ordered chronicle of his interaction with the textbook that will serve as a vital study aid at test time.

How does one overcome the examination fear?

It is common for all students to get nervous during examinations. The chances of forgetting and messing up the exam paper are high because of this examination fear.

The treatment to this major issue lies within each of us. Well-organized and effective study habits are the key solutions to the examination fear. All you need to do is to discipline yourself, stick to a planned timetable. This is one of the best ways to avoid the last minute preparation and the resulting anxiety. Mugging-up without understanding is one of the reasons for feeling anxious for going 'blank' before exams.

In fact when you have understood the material you have won half the battle, and now you only need to memorize it. Remember there is no substitute for hard work coupled with discipline. Both are an essential combination for success in any field. Try yourself a little more to do the extra bit in your everyday work. Do not give up as patience pays in the long run. High performers in any field have the single mindedness and the ability to totally concentrate in whatever they do, and hence they win.

Clear Realistic Goals: Set a clear goal for yourself. "May be to be class first! or School first!! or anything!!!". The goal motivates you and make you to study more. Helps you to focus your energies and mind power efficiently. So set realistic goals that challenge you.

Disciplined Effort: Once you have set your goal, "then sit and plan on how you are going to achieve this goal?, what actions are you going to take? How much time will you spend on it?" Set aside some hours, each day or each week, for studying. Pay attention to your weak areas. Prepare a studies timetable and implement it.

Make it a Habit: High performing students usually study regularly. They know that ‘what you give is what you get.’ Regular hours of studying will surely result in getting better grades.

Study Calmly: Most students make the mistake of studying too hard or studying continuously for long time. This creates mental tension and actually slows down learning and memory. Studying should be done in a balanced manner; short breaks will refresh the brain and will help you learn more. Set aside some time for recreation or entertainment.

Giving Importance: Students who give importance to studies perform better, score more and have less study problems. Studying gives you knowledge and skills that will remain with you for the rest of your life. When you give importance to something, you naturally focus all your attention on it.

We are a team of students from LITTLE ANGELS SCHOOL, Grade 6S2 joined together to create a helping hand to the orphanages in the vicinity.

25 Oct 2008 is a memorable day for all of us as 'STUNTS' made its beginning like a 'Raising Sun' with a fund raising programme during 'Parent Teacher Interaction'. We all exhibited our handicrafts for sale and made good funds too. We all felt so happy with the successful beginning of our STUNTS. Now we made a vow that we keep this STUNTS going great.

Last but not the least, We all thank our teacher Mrs Aparna who actually put this idea into our little minds and teamed us up.
